Dear future college students,
It’s scary, I know.
I’ve decided to share some pointers with you of how I felt during my time at college and share some advise that may help when you start.
This may seem rich coming from me as I only got through 1 year and 2 months of college after suffering a Mental Breakdown and having to drop out during my second year, but I thought I’d share my thoughts anyway.
#1 Think about the subjects you want to check and then think again and then one more time just for luck. You’ll be taking these subjects for 2-3 years and it’s silly to take a subject just because your parents want you to or because your friend is taking it.
#2 Don’t let people peer pressure you, you are your own person and don’t feel like you need to spend your time following the crowd. Do you and be happy with your decisions.
#3 You can never have too much stationary, notepads or folders.
#4 Be honest with yourself and others. If you feel stressed and are struggling with the workload, tell your teacher. It’s better for them to hear it from you and understand, rather than presuming that you’re losing interest in the subject or not trying your hardest.
#5 Make note of all deadlines.
#6 It’s really important to take time away from college work, sometimes it can be good to work through some nights to get your work finished but it isn’t good for all of the time. Try and relax when you can and make sure to get some sleep.
#7 Study groups are a great thing to join. Sharing ideas, asking questions and supporting each other is what college is all about.
#8 Once you’ve been at college for a few weeks, you’ll realise how unimportant looks and appearance is. It’s all about being comfortable in yourself and focusing on your work and your health.
#9 Eat properly! Make sure to eat foods that give you energy and keep your brain active.
#10 Never be scared to ask questions or say that you don’t know.
